Spheres and stars
Since the beginning of time, there have always been unexplainable events that have happened. The Earth is just a small fish in an entire ocean, and in an entire ocean, there are still entities that have yet to be discovered. Every day, scientists or engineers are building ships to travel farther into space and uncover new anomalies. They hope to find the answers to the many questions of life. What mankind does not realize is that discovering new anomalies can make people better. Out in space and on Earth, amazing occurrences can happen. Even the most normal person could be a part of these unusual occurrences that could change their life forever.
One evening, a very normal girl was walking downstairs to her kitchen. She was of the age of 16. Her name was Katharine, and she was a very ordinary girl who lived a very ordinary life. She had brown-goldish hair, blue-green eyes, and tan skin. Katharine was mostly a loner. Ever since she was born, things were not always good for her. Her father had left at a very young age, and she was considered “weird” by her peers. She always wanted to leave her hometown and travel the world to get away from the troubles of school and life in general. She also wanted to make a friend who understands her and loves her for who she truly is.
“Katharine!” Her mother said to Katharine as she cut up carrots with a sharp blade. “You have to walk to school tomorrow. I can’t drive you.”
“Mom, you know it will take me a long time to walk there!” Katharine responded angrily.
“Yes, I know, but just get up earlier and don’t take a long time to get ready!” Her mom snapped.
As Katharine got ready for bed, little did she know an exciting event would happen to her that would alter her universe.
The next morning, Katharine woke up early and was ready for school. Katharine had only walked to school once, and she dreaded walking because it was fall and the bitter cold was moving in, especially in the morning. She was annoyed, but she made sure to put on layers. She grabbed an apple while walking out the door for school.
At the same time Katharine was walking to school, something amazing happened in Amsterdam, a city in the Netherlands. This happened at a park in the afternoon, and as people spent their day in the park, a ray of light rapidly appeared and flashed brightly in one particular spot. The light was so shiny and luminescent that it blinded anyone who looked at it. People were screaming, frightened at a sight they had never seen before.
The light had slowly expanded into a big ball of illumination. Its bright white color turned into a dark color, as a blurred image of stars and planets shownshowed in the sphere. It looked like something out of the movie Interstellar. The sight was beautiful to see as the stars, planets, and purple-black darkness could be seen within the form of the sphere. A figure appeared from the Sphere, almost as if it had walked from space and contorted space to be on Earth.
The being looked unreal, not like a human but something even more extraordinary. It was beautiful, but it did not have a face. It had alluring colors on its “body” that shined like glitter. These colors were not colors on the rainbow, and they were colors humans did not uncover yet. Those people who had been blinded were crying out in pain. Others who had not been blinded came to assist these people but were astonished at the sight to behold. Its unordinary looks were unlike anything anyone had ever seen.
Immediately, sirens were heard as the military was coming to confront whatever was happening at that park. The Police in the Netherlands had alerted whatever militia was nearby to help. Like every modern society, some people were taking videos with their cell phones of the whole event and were posting videos in real-time. The big news stations got ahold of these videos, and the government sent out an emergency broadcast to all of the citizens in the Netherlands.
The being turned its body towards the sound of civil defense sirens going off and then turned back to the blinded people. It seemed like it did not understand what it did to them but became frightened from all the noise that was coming towards it. Instantly, the entity pressed the palms of its hands together, looking down, and vanished, leaving behind little sparks of light.
Back in the US of A, Katharine was walking to school and listening to Celene Dion while kicking little pebbles along the sidewalk. As she walked along, a little spark of light appeared in front of her. She stopped and looked at the light in confusion. At first, she thought it was a weird reflection of the sun. But slowly, the light burned brighter, and a strange apparition appeared before her. It was the same being that arrived in the park in Amsterdam, but she did not know that.
Katharine’s eyes widened, and she gasped as the being fell to its knees before her. It looked like it was hurt. Katharine froze in fear, but she noticed the being’s abnormal beauty. She thought she was seeing an angel.
The being started to speak to her in a language she did not understand. She hesitated before reaching her hand out to help it stand up. As it touched her, its body immediately crumbled into a thousand pieces, almost like it had been slashed with a sword like shattered glass. Katharine screamed as the sight was gruesome. Almost immediately, the being’s pieces started to reconstruct one by one, slowly crawling up each other to build itself. Once this process had finished, the being looked like a normal boy.
“Oh my gosh!” Katharine yelped as the being looked around anxiously in the form of a boy. She was not scared for some reason; it seemed like the being emanated peace and a sense of security.
“H-help… I no have p-place safe go.” The being spluttered in scrambled words.
“What is going on? Uh, do you need a place to… hide?” Katharine blinked rapidly, trying to decipher its words.
“Do yes.” The being said, its words still scrambled. Katharine took a moment to recoup after that horrifying moment she just witnessed. She could not believe she had encountered this creature that had done these unexplainable things. She quickly looked around to see if anyone else had witnessed this. She then paused and looked down at the being’s hand before she took it and speed-walked with him back to her house.
They both were silent during the walk back to the house. Katharine thought about how this creature came to her, and she felt safe with it for some reason. She figured she must be important for this thing to appear in front of her. As they reached the porch of her home, she opened the door, making sure her mom had left for work already. She slowly took the creature inside her home and dropped her backpack down.
“Do you have a name?” Katharine asked while sitting on the couch, the being looking around at the house.
“Th-themis.” The being said to her.
“Oh… Themis, I like that name!” Katharine responded and smiled. “How did you uh get here?” Katharine asked.
The being became better at forming its words, “Something c-called me to come. I went to big place, and people made loud noise, so I got scared, and now I come here.” He replied, sitting down next to her.
“What noises?” Katharine asked as she searched his brightly violet-colored eyes. She had never seen eyes like that.
“I hurt people, and scary men come. I did not mean to hurt them, but they are looking for me.” Themis whispered. Katharine nodded to him. Feeling awkward, she turned on the TV. He watched the TV in curiosity as she flipped through the channels. She stopped at a news station and gasped,
“We have breaking news this morning. An unknown entity appeared in Amsterdam this morning. Reports say it came out of a flashing light and a sphere that looked like space. We have videos of this event taken by civilians.” A video was played of Themis walking out from his space sphere and looking around as people fell to the ground in pain. Katharine looked at Themis, who was staring in fear at the screen. Katharine flipped through all the different news stations, Fox, CNN, BBC, PBS, and more. They all were reporting about the same thing; Themis arriving.
“Reports from NASA say that they would have picked up signals of a space occurrence like this. They believe this being might have the power to bend space and travel here. The being had disappeared when the police force came to confront the creature. The creature is missing now and is being looked for by authorities. This is the first known contact with an unexplained alien being. Stay safe.”
Katharine stared at Themis in horror. What if someone saw Themis turn into a boy when he came to Katharine? What are they going to do to Themis if they find him? Katharine knew deep down something was telling her she needed to protect him at all costs.
Clearly frightened, Themis asked, “A-are they looking for me?”
“I think there are bad people who are coming to find you… Don’t worry; I won’t let them.” Katharine said to Themis while taking his hand. She knew helping Themis would endanger her, and her mother would not know where she was if they ran away. Katharine could not put her mother through that, but she had no choice. She knew that Themis could not stay there.
“I am going to protect you, don’t worry.” She told Themis, who looked like he was about to have a panic attack. “I just need to know if you are here for a reason to find something, and I need to know what you are.” Growing serious, she had not asked this question before, but she realized it was important.
“Well… I was born out there.” He said, pointing to the sky.“I was raised by Mel.” Katharine noticed his words were becoming less scrambled.
“Mel is how you say, ‘des…potic.’ He feels like he radiates… peace, but he is a pansophical being.”
“When I grew older, he put me on a planet called Epsilon Andromedae. I was trained to bend space by him. I have lived my whole life on that planet, but I was very lonely. I desired something, but I did not know what it was. I lived my whole life on that planet, but I was very lonely.”
“I would see spacecrafts pass by. They sometimes would land and speak to me. They were funny little creatures, very intelligent, but they would always leave.” Themis explained matter of factly. Katharine stared in awe. He had met other aliens, and he was raised by an omnipotent creature. He had experienced things humans could not comprehend. But, when he talked about Mel, Katharine only thought that it could be God, or at least a god.
Themis continued sadly, “One day, I asked Mel when he visited me if I could go explore the universe and maybe find something I most desired. He told me I could, but he would take me there himself. So, I agreed, and he transported me near here. He did not come, but I could still hear him. But…I was also hearing other voices and that same desire coming from this blue planet, your planet. I transported to the first place, and then I transported to you. I feel that same desire, but I can’t understand what it is. So that is my story.” Themis looked down nervously, playing with his fingers.
Katharine was speechless. Slowly taking a deep breath, she exclaimed slowly, “Wow, that is incredible.”
Katharine wrote a quick note for her mom. She knew her mom would freak out, but she had to protect Themis. She got supplies, and they ran out the door into the woods. Little did Katharine know that a neighbor who was always in everybody’s business had seen the whole meeting between Katharine and Themis and recorded them on camera. This neighbor had seen the news reports early and saw that the creature that appeared in front of Katharine matched the creature from the park in Amsterdam. The neighbor immediately drove to the police stationstations and showed them the video. Little did Katharine and Themis know they were in danger.
As Katharine and Themis walked along a path in a forest, Katharine took Themis’s hand in her hand and smiled at him. Themis stared at the beauty around him. Unfortunately, the video had made its way to a military base nearby. They had gotten word that the entity had appeared in Houston, Texas, and had taken the form of a teenage boy about 5 feet 9 inches tall with brunette hair. He had run away with a teenage girl about 5 foot 7 with goldish-brownish hair. Troops were being sent out to look for them and confront them.
Katharine didn’t really have a plan. She just knew she had to keep Themis safe. They walked along, and the day was getting latelater. They found themselves near a gas station, so they went in.
As they checked out the snacks, Themis thought in his mind how she was amazing to him. She took him in and treated him like he was important to her. Almost like she was his friend. Friend? He did not really have a word for it in his own language, but that was it! He realized that the thing he most desired was friendship, and that is what he and Katharine had. She was lonely, and he was lonely, so they found each other.
The man working at the counter glanced up from his phone and saw the teenagers. As he looked closer, he saw that the boy was the dangerous entity on the news. He quietly called 911. He pretended as if nothing had happened. He would have to stall them from leaving, so the authorities could arrive in time.
As Katharine browsed through the snacks and candy, Themis was fascinated by it all. This gave the authorities time to get here, and before they knew it, a S.W.A.T team came into the gas station with guns, screaming at the kids to get down. Themis froze in fear; he forgot he was stronger than these people. Themis just did not want Katharine to get hurt. The SWAT team escorted the two with guns into the car. The ride was long, and Katharine cried. She was really scared. They were sent to a place Katharine had never seen before and were efficiently escorted into a science lab.
“Hello there, young …man,” a scientist greeted Themis.
“I just want to know about you, so please come in,.” tThe scientist told Themis while men pushed him forward into the laboratory. Katharine had to come too, but she knew something bad would happen to Themis. Themis sat on a chair, and the scientist looked directly at him.
“What are you?” The scientist asked Themis while holding a big needle in his hand. Themis looked at it in fear.
“Oh, don’t worry, this will not hurt you. It will just let me get answers out of you if you don’t cooperate.” The scientist smiled evilly at Themis.
“I don’t understand… Why do you all think I am so dangerous?” Themis asked the scientist fearfully.
“We don’t know what you are and if you will endanger the human race,” the scientist said.
“I would never do that!” Themis yelled. The scientist, feeling threatened, injected him with a needle. This made Themis mad, and suddenly, a flash of light appeared from his hands, blinding the scientist. As the scientist screamed in pain, the men with guns shot at Themis, who also blinded them with his light. Whimpering, Katharine covered her head and crouched down. More men with guns came and shot at Themis, who kept using his light powers against them. The fight was brutal, as many men were blinded and withering on the floor. Themis had a deathly glare in his eyes, and Katharine saw that. She was almost afraid of him from his look of madness.
Katharine screamed out in pain as a bullet hit the side of her leg. You could hear the sound of a bone crunch. Themis heard this and looked over at her. He rushed over to her but kept on using his powers to protect himself against the men.
“Katharine! Oh no, this is all my fault.” Themis yelled as tears streamed down his cheeks. After all hope was lost, Themis took a deep breath and yelled something out in a language, not of earth. As he chanted, an even brighter light appeared with a being. The men with guns were stunned at the sight of it.
“You all must stop this.” The creature said in a booming voice, yet calm. The men looked at each other as something compelled them to put their guns down. The being looked at Themis, its body glowing and divine. Themis nodded at the being as it made the men seem not to understand where they were or what was happening. The being then just disappeared.
Katharine was still in pain, and Themis shouted to the men,
“Come get her help! She broke her leg!” The men rushed over to Katharine to help her. Being in a secret governmental science lab, there werewas medical personnel who could not help her until she got to the hospital. So she was rushed to the ER by the brainwashed men with guns. She woke up on a hospital bed with Themis by her side.
“How did you make them stop shooting, and who was that creature?” Katharine asked groggily.
Themis smiled, “That was Mel. I called out to him to help me, and he came in the form he could. He made everyone forget that this situation happened and that I arrived.”
“That is incredible,” Katharine said while holding Themis’s hand.
“Katharine… there is something I need to tell you,” Themis said to Katharine while looking down.
“I realized the thing that I desired was friendship, and I found it with you. The universe brought us together because it knew we were meant to have an amazing friendship. I can’t believe I found what I was looking for, but the thing is, I have to leave you. Mel needs me now, and I can not stay here and endanger you. It breaks my heart, but I will visit you, and I will let you visit me.”
“What! No, please don’t leave me!” Katharine implored quietly with a look of sadness.
“I am so sorry, but I have to. As I said before, I will visit you, and you visit me. I will watch over you and always protect you. I have completed what I needed to do, which was to find what I most desired in the whole wide world, and that was you. I will transport you to me sometimessome times. I love you, Katharine.” Themis said in a low voice as he kissed Katharine on the forehead. He backed up, smiled at her as a light appeared, and transformed into his entity self. He disappeared as the light disappeared.
Katharine’s mom rushed into the room and hugged her. Mel made Katharine’s mom think Katharine had injured her leg at school. A tear went down Katherine’s face, but she knew, or at least hoped, she would see Themis again very soon. Themis looked down at her from space and smiled.

Ode to an Artichoke
The artichoke, so misunderstood
The outer leaves bristle and stand at attention
They act like soldiers, valiantly protecting the center of their kingdom
Readying their swords for any intruder coming to take the heart
The heart’s richness promotes love and peace
The soldiers fall as the leaves are ripped apart
The kingdom’s walls have fallen in a moat of dripping butter
Each layer does not surpass the heart’s eternal deliciousness
Oh, poor artichoke, you are so defenseless
You were so misunderstood but so appreciated for your bounty
